The Sarnia Brigade senior team began their season with a 2-1 win over the Brigade 22U team Wednesday at Errol Russell Park.

Ron Oneson’s sacrifice fly drove in Kyle Moloney for the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Vince Caschera had two hits and an RBI.

Winning pitcher Jake Taylor threw four innings after relieving starter Jake Burgess.

The Brigade seniors are the defending champions in the Southwestern Senior Baseball League, which is on hiatus this season because of a lack of teams.

Harvey, Highfield spark Lancers’ win

Lauren Harvey scored two tries and kicked three converts in the Lambton Central Lancers’ 43-5 win over the Northern Vikings in LKSSAA senior girls’ rugby Thursday.

Naysa Highfield added two tries and one convert. Kylee Drury, Aliya Anderson and Phoenix Burns had one try apiece.

St. Patrick’s beat Great Lakes 7-0 in the other game.

Lambton Central, St. Patrick’s and Great Lakes share second place at 2-1, one game behind Ursuline (3-0), with two weeks left in the regular season. Northern and Chatham-Kent are tied for last at 0-3.

Irish clinch bye to boys’ rugby final

The St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish will host the LKSSAA senior boys’ rugby final Wednesday, May 29, after placing first in the regular season with a 6-0 record.

They beat the Ursuline Lancers 30-0 and the Great Lakes Wolfpack 28-5 in Wednesday’s round-robin. Great Lakes also lost to Ursuline 32-12.

Great Lakes (0-6) will visit Ursuline (3-3) for the semifinal Wednesday, May 22.

Rops scores twice in Eagles’ shutout

Ally Rops scored twice in the North Lambton Eagles’ 6-0 win over the McGregor Panthers in LKSSAA senior girls’ soccer Thursday.

Ava Joris, Brenna Scott, Shae Ravell and Lily Heynsbergen also scored for the Eagles (5-1-1), who’ll visit the Lambton-Kent Cardinals (6-1-0) to decide first place in the A division Monday.

The Eagles beat the Tilbury Titans 3-0 Wednesday on goals by Jenna Marsh, Rylann MacLaughlan and Abby Rops.

In the AA division, first-place Great Lakes (2-2-0) won 4-3 over Lambton Central (0-5-1).

In the AAA division, Presley Vanderkloet scored for Northern (3-1-1) in a 2-1 loss to Ursuline (3-2-0) Wednesday.

St. Patrick’s (3-0-1) won 10-0 over Wallaceburg (0-5-1).

North Lambton earns No. 1 seed

Trevor Vandenberk and Sean O’Neil scored in the North Lambton Eagles’ 2-1 win over the McGregor Panthers in LKSSAA senior boys’ soccer Thursday.

The Eagles won the A division’s regular-season title with a 4-1-0 record for 12 points, two more than the Lambton-Kent Cardinals (3-1-1).

In the AA division, first-place Great Lakes (2-2-0) won 6-0 over Lambton Central (0-5-0).

In the AAA division, Jack Baerg scored for Northern (4-1-0) in a 5-1 loss to Ursuline (5-0-0) Wednesday.

Vikings’ Robinson wins two events

Northern’s Avery Robinson won the senior girls’ 100 metres and 400-metre hurdles at the third LKSSAA all-comers track and field meet Tuesday in Chatham.

Vikings teammates Skarlit Worton, Olivia Somers, Alex Fortney, Lily Bressette, Avery Titus, Lily Marshall and Natalie Pretty each won one individual event.

Lambton Central’s Meagan Munro, Hunter Mitchell, Hunter Campbell and Sabine Gerrits, North Lambton’s Victoria Clark, and Adam Voisey and Rachel Burns of St. Patrick’s also won one apiece.

The LKSSAA championship will be Tuesday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 15, at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex at 11 a.m.
